Sanggangseondae and Hagangseondae
There are two shrines in Deokpo-dong in which people wish safety and peace for their community. One is called Hagangseondae(下降仙臺), also known as halmaedangsan, which is located behind Sasang Elementary School. The other is Sanggangseondae(上降仙臺) known as halbaedangsan, located roadside of Deokpo Station. People call the places Gangseondae because there is an old folk belief that Sinseon(神仙), Taoist hermit with miraculous powers, descends from the sky and takes a shower there on every lunar December 1. Chinese letter Sang(上) and Ha(下) indicate "up and down" respectively. In pure Korean, halbae and halmae mean grandfather and grandmother. Dangsan is kind of a shrine. So halbaedangsan is a shrine for a grandfather, and halmaedangsan for a grandmother. In the Joseon Dynasty, Dongrae Magistrate visited and left a message in the Dangsan Shrine. In Korean' folk belief, big rocks or old trees are often worshipped. Sanggangseondae and Hagangseondae are also the symbols of people's natural religion. They began to take an old tree at Gangseondae as Dangsan tree (a guardian tree of the town) and build shrines around 1700s to make a wish for rich year and peace in the village. The old custom is still handed down.
